Mayor Brown Signs Updated 'Complete Streets' Ordinance into Law
Mayor Lisa Brown signed an updated "Complete Streets" ordinance on August 6, 2025, reaffirming Spokane's commitment to creating safe streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The initiative, led by Transportation Director Jon Snyder and supported by Councilmembers Kitty Klitzke and Paul Dillon, modernizes city codes while incorporating references to the Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Priority Network. This update will integrate more walking and biking features into street projects, ultimately saving costs during network improvements. Mayor Brown emphasized that the legislation aims to serve everyone, regardless of their mode of transportation, stating, "Complete Streets are for everyone. " Councilmember Klitzke expressed gratitude for the collaboration in revisiting a policy from over a decade ago, highlighting the broadened scope of implementation.
Councilmember Dillon remarked on the importance of designing streets with intention to create safer, healthier, and more accessible environments. The ordinance positions Spokane to better compete for state grant funding, which will aid in achieving the city's transportation goals. These changes are expected to significantly enhance community mobility and address the concerns of Spokane residents.
