Mayor Brown Signs Updated 'Complete Streets' Ordinance into Law
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has signed an updated "Complete Streets" ordinance to enhance road safety and accessibility for all users. The legislation, spearheaded by Director of Transportation Jon Snyder and sponsored by Councilmembers Kitty Klitzke and Paul Dillon, revises the Spokane Municipal Code and incorporates the Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Priority Network. By harmonizing city regulations with state law, Spokane strengthens its eligibility for state grant funding. Mayor Brown stated, "Complete Streets are for everyone," emphasizing the initiative's inclusive approach. Councilmember Klitzke noted the collaborative effort to update a policy initially passed over a decade ago, which broadens its implementation scope.
Councilmember Dillon added that the ordinance represents an investment in a safer and healthier Spokane. The updated law aims to address mobility concerns and create streets that serve people of all ages and abilities. This initiative reflects the city's commitment to community engagement and improving urban infrastructure.
