Mayor Brown Signs Updated 'Complete Streets' Ordinance into Law
Mayor Lisa Brown signed an updated "Complete Streets" ordinance, reinforcing Spokane's commitment to accessible streets for all users. The legislation, led by Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder, updates the Spokane Municipal Code and incorporates references to the Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Priority Network. Sponsored by Councilmembers Kitty Klitzke and Paul Dillon, the policy aims to enhance mobility while reducing costs on street improvements. Mayor Brown highlighted that the updates will enable the city to design streets that cater to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. Snyder noted that intentional planning can create streets that serve diverse needs across the community.
Klitzke expressed gratitude for citizen input in shaping the ordinance, which broadens its implementation scope. Councilmember Dillon described the updates as an investment in a safer, healthier Spokane. The ordinance also improves Spokane's competitiveness for state grant funding.
