City Seeks Feedback For Climate Planning
Spokane's City Council launched a community climate policy survey to collect public input on future climate action initiatives and policies. Open until August 31, 2025, the survey allows residents to express their preferences in various languages, including Spanish and Arabic. Mayor Lisa Brown highlighted the necessity of community feedback from all 29 neighborhoods to effectively address climate change impacts. Earlier this year, the city gathered insights from over 1,500 residents regarding climate challenges such as wildfires and extreme heat, which informed the Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment. This assessment integrated local experiences with extensive data to pinpoint specific climate risks facing the region.
The climate planning project receives funding from a state grant linked to Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, which aims to reduce climate pollution and improve public health. The results from the survey will shape policies included in the PlanSpokane 2046 Periodic Update of the Comprehensive Plan. Engaging the community is crucial for creating effective strategies to enhance Spokane's resilience to climate hazards.
