Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response

Spokane River levels have fallen below 1,000 cubic feet per second, triggering Level 2 watering restrictions for residents. The city recommends limiting outdoor watering to no more than two days per week and prohibits cleaning hardscapes with water. Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlighted that small actions collectively protect the Spokane River, which is vital for the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. The Water Wise Spokane program offers free consultations to assist residents in reducing water consumption year-round. Since its start, the program has saved over 344 million gallons of water through various educational initiatives.

In 2024, community participation in conservation efforts saved 45. 5 million gallons. Spokane uses four times the national average of water during summer months, underscoring the need for ongoing conservation. Half of the aquifer's recharge comes from the Spokane River, making these measures crucial for sustainability.
