Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's latest Point-in-Time Count indicates a continuing decline in homelessness, with sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. The count, conducted on January 22, 2025, involved surveying 1,806 individuals using enhanced methodology that included outreach teams targeting known encampments. This year saw a notable rise in unsheltered individuals, increasing from 443 to 617, due to the improved data collection approach. Mayor Lisa Brown reiterated the importance of consistent engagement in navigating individuals toward treatment, case management, and transitional housing. The City is actively expanding shelter capacity and investing in initiatives like the Encampment Resolution Program, which has successfully closed four encampments and achieved an 80% referral success rate to housing.

Other findings revealed that 43% of surveyed adults reported serious mental illness, while 52% indicated substance use disorders. The City aims to continue these efforts to provide safe shelter and support for those in need. This ongoing commitment is critical as the community addresses the complexities of homelessness.
