Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response
Spokane has enacted Level 2 watering restrictions after river levels fell below 1,000 cubic feet per second, as mandated by a 2022 conservation ordinance. Outdoor watering is now limited to two days a week, and residents are prohibited from watering during peak hours of 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.
Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlights the importance of community efforts in protecting river flows, which are essential for the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. Spokane's summer water usage is four times the national average, underscoring the need for effective conservation measures. The Water Wise Spokane program has successfully saved over 344 million gallons of water since its inception through various educational initiatives. In 2024, community participation in conservation programs resulted in savings of 45. 5 million gallons.
The city’s efforts aim to ensure sustainable water supply as half of the aquifer's recharge comes from the Spokane River. Adopting these measures reflects the city's commitment to responsible water management amid changing environmental conditions.
