Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's recent Point-in-Time Count indicates a second consecutive year of declining homelessness, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22. The new survey methodology improved accuracy by deploying volunteers to known encampments rather than relying solely on random searches. Sheltered homelessness dropped from 1,578 to 1,189, thanks to the navigation center-specialized site model, which has successfully placed 40 percent of participants into stable housing. While the count showed a rise in unsheltered individuals—up from 443 to 617—this reflects the enhanced outreach efforts. The City of Spokane aims to expand shelter capacity based on actual usage and continues to invest in its Encampment Resolution Program.

Mayor Lisa Brown highlighted the effectiveness of consistent engagement in addressing homelessness. Volunteers of America expressed support for tailored interventions that help individuals achieve stability. The data underscores the ongoing challenges and progress in Spokane's approach to homelessness.
