Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count shows a second consecutive year of declining homelessness, with 1,189 individuals in emergency shelters, down from 1,578. The January 22 count surveyed 1,806 individuals, including an increase in unsheltered individuals from 443 to 617 due to enhanced survey methods. This year’s methodology involved outreach teams directly engaging known encampments, improving data accuracy. Mayor Lisa Brown stated that consistent engagement and navigation to treatment and transitional housing are effective strategies. The city has also closed four encampments since the count, with an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals.

Additionally, the count revealed that 106 veterans were identified, a decrease from 121, and 43 percent of adults reported serious mental illness. The city continues to invest in expanding shelter capacity to ensure safety for individuals seeking refuge. Despite challenges, local officials remain committed to addressing homelessness through targeted interventions.
