Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count shows a decline in homelessness for the second year, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22, 2025. The count revealed a decrease in sheltered homelessness, dropping from 1,578 to 1,189 individuals, largely due to improved coordination through a new navigation center model. Conversely, the number of unsheltered individuals rose from 443 to 617, reflecting a more focused outreach approach. Mayor Lisa Brown stated that consistent engagement and navigation to services is key to tackling homelessness effectively. Volunteers of America emphasized the importance of identifying community needs through the PIT Count to tailor interventions.
Since the last count, Spokane has closed four encampments, achieving an 80% success rate in housing referrals. The data also highlighted that 43% of surveyed adults suffer from serious mental illness, and 52% report substance use disorders. The City continues to expand shelter capacities, ensuring safe options for individuals seeking assistance.
