Fast Response Contains Suspicious Brush Fire in Latah Valley

On June 18, 2025, at approximately 3:45 p. m. , Battalion 1 of the Spokane Fire Department detected a smoke column while assisting with a wildfire in the 6300 block of South Cheney Spokane Road. Crews arrived within ten minutes at the 2900 block of West Thorpe Road, where they found a grass and brush fire burning under an acre in a timbered area. The Spokane Fire Department, supported by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Spokane County Fire District 10, quickly engaged the fire.

Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the fire was contained, and firefighters began mopping up hot spots just over an hour after their arrival. Investigators are currently probing the fire's suspicious cause and are seeking information on a dark-colored Ford Ranger seen leaving the area shortly after the fire started. The rapid response highlights the importance of mutual aid in managing wildfires. Spokane residents are advised to report any sightings of the vehicle or information related to the fire.
