NEW Downtown Chimes and Siren Now Signal Noon Hour in Snoqualmie
Snoqualmie will introduce a new noon chime system on November 1, 2025, merging the historic fire siren with the bells of the United Methodist Church. This change aims to honor local history and prevent startling visitors. The initiative received a positive vote from the SnoValley Chamber and church members, reflecting community consensus. Longtime resident Carol Peterson proposed the compromise to celebrate the legacy of the fire siren while honoring significant local figures, including past mayor Charles Peterson and electrical expert Ed Wenty, whose son continues to monitor the siren today. The church and fire siren both have over 100 years of history, emphasizing the community's commitment to preserving these traditions.
The new system will feature the church bells chiming first, followed by a shortened fire siren. This approach not only maintains local customs but also acknowledges the need for a more welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The support from local businesses and church members highlights the importance of this tradition to the community.
