Everett police save grade school's camping trip from cancellation

Snohomish, WALocal News

Olivia Park Elementary School in south Everett nearly canceled its fifth-grade camping trip due to insufficient male chaperons. The Everett Police Department intervened, with Officer Wade Wyrick and other officers volunteering to meet the required student-to-adult ratio. Wyrick expressed the importance of community engagement, stating every child deserves a chance to experience camp. Student Cecilia shared her excitement about the trip, emphasizing the joy of being with friends. School counselor Stacy Goody noted the trip's significance, as it provided unique experiences for students from a high-crime neighborhood.

The camping opportunity is funded through a state grant, highlighting its community support. This year marked the second time the school faced cancellation due to chaperon shortages, making the police's assistance vital. The trip not only offers outdoor education but also allows students to see law enforcement in a positive light.
