Federal personnel cuts expected to affect prescribed burns in wildfire season
The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) expects federal funding cuts and layoffs at the U. S. Forest Service to hinder its prescribed burn program, which is vital for reducing wildfire risks. Since its launch in 2021, the program has partnered with various agencies to perform controlled burns across the state, but the DNR warns of a potential increase in wildfire activity this season due to accumulated fuel loads and dry conditions. DNR officials emphasize the importance of these burns, noting that even areas like Snohomish County benefit indirectly.
As local and state agencies brace for a heavier workload in managing wildfires, residents are advised to take preventative measures, such as clearing gutters and creating defensible spaces. The Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management is developing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan to enhance resilience against wildfires over the next two years. Residents can attend two meetings in May to learn more about this plan. Additionally, a wildfire preparedness class will be held on May 7 to further educate the community.
