Food banks scramble as federal support declines

Snohomish, WALocal News

Food banks in Snohomish County are struggling after losing significant funding from federal USDA programs, totaling $8. 5 million and $4. 7 million. This funding cut occurs as the demand for food assistance surges, with a 34 percent increase in individuals served across various food banks from January to March. Volunteers of America has partnered with local farms to provide high-quality produce, but the loss of funding jeopardizes these initiatives.

The Edmonds Food Bank reported a 15 percent decrease in funding, while the Sky Valley Food Bank faces a 25 percent budget cut. Officials highlight that these reductions will result in less nutritious food for families in need, with many clients being families with children and the elderly. The We Feed WA program, which was established to aid farmers and food banks during the pandemic, will also conclude in June. Despite these challenges, state officials remain committed to seeking new funding opportunities. Governor Ferguson has recommended increased funding for food assistance programs, which could provide some relief.
