Coyote stalks, charges man and dog on Edmonds, WA trail
In Edmonds, Washington, a man reported a coyote charging and stalking him and his dog along the Southwest County Trail. Jerome Thiebaud described the coyote's behavior, noting it followed them for about 15 minutes while barking and howling. He interpreted the encounter as a protective act, suggesting the coyote likely had a den nearby. Thiebaud, who felt uncomfortable but not threatened due to his size, used a stick to deter the animal. He has observed increased coyote activity in the area, particularly closer to homes, since last winter.
Emphasizing the need for responsible behavior, Thiebaud advised against feeding wildlife, as it can lead to dangerous encounters. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife does not require reports of ordinary coyote sightings but encourages logging encounters through the Woodland Park Zoo’s Carnivore Spotter program. This incident highlights growing concerns about wildlife interactions in suburban areas.
