Cold Weather Shelters Preparing to Open for Winter Season
Cold weather shelters in Snohomish County will open for the winter season as temperatures are projected to fall below 34° F. Seven locations across the county will provide overnight shelter, operated by community organizations like the Everett Gospel Mission and Volunteers of America Western Washington. These shelters often partner with local faith communities to serve those in need, including a specific facility for women with children. Community Transit and Everett Transit will offer free transportation to the shelters, enhancing accessibility for individuals facing homelessness. Last winter, the shelters provided 6,468 bed nights, reflecting the critical role they play in the community.
The busiest night occurred on February 16, when 260 individuals sought refuge from the cold. The Snohomish County Public Safety Hub will publish daily updates on shelter availability. These efforts underscore the community's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during extreme weather conditions.
