Snohomish council opts for no city property tax increase for next year

Snohomish, WALocal News

The Snohomish City Council voted 5-1-1 to maintain the current property tax rate for the upcoming year, rejecting a proposal for a 1% increase that could have added about $13,000 to city revenues. Councilwoman Karen Guzak opposed the decision, while Councilwoman Lea Anne Burke abstained from voting. Public comments largely supported the council's choice to avoid an increase, reflecting community sentiment. The finance director recommended the increase to better balance the revenue sources, as property taxes currently account for approximately 90% of operational funding. The general fund, which relies on various revenue streams, is projected to face a $1 million deficit, with total expenditures estimated at $15 million against $14 million in revenue.

Retail sales tax has provided a steady influx of about $5. 9 million each year, illustrating the reliance on business activity for city funding. The council's decision highlights ongoing discussions about fiscal management and community priorities amidst financial pressures. Maintaining the current tax rate means the city must find alternative solutions to address its budgetary challenges.
