Monroe stays with Republic as solid-waste hauler

Snohomish, WALocal News

Monroe City Council voted 5-2 on Nov. 18 to amend its solid-waste collection contract with Republic Services, addressing communication issues that arose during a labor dispute. The council's decision followed months of deliberation, with members emphasizing the need for a more reliable service for residents. Kevin Hanford and Jason Gamble opposed the amendment, with Hanford advocating for a new procurement process and Gamble expressing concerns over response times. Council Member Heather Fulcher pointed out that costs would rise regardless, suggesting that amendments could mitigate increases.

Wendy Weiker from Republic Services reiterated the company’s commitment to improving service and maintaining the partnership. The council explored various options, including securing a new trash hauler, before concluding that amendments were the most cost-effective approach. This decision reflects ongoing efforts to enhance municipal services amid rising utility costs. The council aims to work closely with Republic Services to implement the necessary contract changes.
