Food banks prepare for holiday season in Snohomish County
Food banks in Snohomish County have seen a dramatic rise in clients following the suspension of SNAP benefits on November 1, which affected 72,590 residents. The Sky Valley Food Bank reported a weekly increase of 44 new households seeking assistance. Matthew Campbell highlighted that the current strain on food systems parallels the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, although funding was more robust then. Community contributions have surged, with the United Way of Snohomish County providing a $50,000 Emergency Grant to assist local food banks. The VOA Food Bank in Everett experienced a 10 percent increase in new clients, reflecting the urgent need for assistance.
Food banks are actively encouraging families to reach out, assuring them they have food available for the holiday season. They are particularly in need of proteins and staple foods, in addition to holiday items. For those interested in donating, contacting local food banks is encouraged to understand specific needs.
