Monroe will be looking at water rate increase

Snohomish, WALocal News

The City of Monroe proposes a 7. 2% water rate increase effective January 1, 2026, due to rising costs from purchasing water from Everett. This adjustment also introduces a 10% stormwater utility tax on gross receipts, leading to a $7 monthly increase in base utility rates for residents. The City Council's plan responds to a prior modest 3. 8% rate increase included in Monroe's 2025–2026 budget.

While the city has not significantly raised rates in recent years, this change aims to maintain quality utility services, including drinking water and stormwater management. Discounts may be available for low-income seniors and disabled residents to ease the financial burden. Monroe officials assert that even with the proposed adjustments, utility costs will remain competitive compared to surrounding areas. On November 18, the City Council will review the ordinance for these budget changes. A comprehensive utility rate study is set to be conducted in 2026 to further assess future needs.
