Federal Shutdown Impact on SNAP and WIC Recipients in Snohomish County

Snohomish, WALocal News

Snohomish County officials are sounding alarms as over 77,000 residents risk losing SNAP benefits due to a potential federal shutdown. Local food banks, already facing challenges from previous USDA funding cuts, are preparing for increased demand as families seek assistance. Governor Ferguson announced a $2. 2 million weekly aid package to state food banks, aiming to support those affected until federal benefits are restored. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services has indicated that SNAP benefits may be halted after October 31 if the shutdown continues.

Meanwhile, WIC services are projected to be available through mid-November, contingent on federal actions. Local leaders urge residents to support food banks and nonprofits, which play a critical role in feeding the community. “More than 77,000 people in Snohomish County depend on SNAP benefits for survival,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. As federal judges have ordered the release of contingency funds for SNAP, uncertainty remains regarding the extent of benefits that will be distributed during the ongoing crisis.
