Planning commission advises to reject Maltby UGA growth proposal

Snohomish, WALocal News

The Maltby planning commission voted 8-1 against a proposal to expand the Urban Growth Area, reflecting community opposition voiced during the September 23 meeting. Many residents argued that the expansion would eliminate valuable open space and negatively impact quality of life. County Executive Dave Somers previously vetoed a similar proposal, asserting it did not align with growth targets and could disrupt zoning plans in the Turner’s Corner area. The current proposal seeks to designate two noncontiguous areas totaling 270 acres, including the former Wellington Hills golf course and land near state Route 9. This expansion would allow the Northshore School District to connect land to the sewer system, facilitating future school construction.

Commissioner Merle Ash, who voted against the proposal, highlighted the need for affordable housing in the region. The County Council has the final say, but a date for the discussion has yet to be established. Local advocates remain concerned about the potential loss of green spaces and the health implications of increased development.
