Monroe council to re-evaluate solid-waste contract with hauler Republic Services

Snohomish, WALocal News

Monroe City Council is reviewing its solid-waste disposal contract with Republic Services due to significant communication breakdowns and missed pickups during a labor dispute in July. After residents dealt with two weeks of missed trash collection, a local drop-off event was organized, resulting in long lines and traffic congestion. During the September 16 meeting, council members explored three options regarding the contract, which is set to expire in December 2027. The options include procuring a new provider, amending the existing contract, or leaving it unchanged. If the council opts to terminate the contract, they must notify Republic Services three years in advance.

A motion to delay further discussions passed 5-2, with the next meeting scheduled for mid-October. Residents should anticipate potential increases in refuse collection rates, reflecting market trends. Amending the contract is expected to be less costly than seeking a new provider and could provide an avenue for addressing current service issues.
