Snohomish County Awarded 2 Million Federal Grant for Everett Intermodal Yard

Snohomish, WALocal News

Snohomish County secured a $2 million federal BUILD grant to improve the Everett Intermodal Yard as part of a $34 million infrastructure project. The enhancements aim to boost rail safety and capacity for the county's solid waste management operations. County Executive Dave Somers expressed gratitude for the funding, which will support sustainable waste transport practices. Congressman Rick Larsen, who pushed for the grant, stated its significance in creating jobs and alleviating congestion in Northwest Washington. Public Works Director Kelly Snyder underscored the urgent need for these improvements, which will help manage increasing waste volumes efficiently.

He noted that without the grant, the county could face severe challenges in waste management, including reliance on trucking due to limited rail capacity. In 2022, a shortage of rail containers led to a backlog of refuse, highlighting the importance of this funding. The project aligns with Snohomish County's commitment to environmental preservation and public health safety.
