Snohomish County Public Works has been recognized with the 2025 Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association for its Index-Galena Road Flood Repair project. This project, taking nearly three years to complete after a 17-year planning phase, successfully restored access to the upper Skykomish River and Wild Sky Wilderness. Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers noted the project's significance in overcoming challenges to deliver functional infrastructure for residents. Public Works Director Kelly Snyder emphasized that the project not only rebuilt a road but also revitalized community connections and ensured reliable access for emergency services and outdoor enthusiasts. Extensive engineering efforts included relocating the roadway, improving drainage systems, and enhancing local wildlife habitats.

Challenges included working in a remote area and adhering to environmental commitments. The award will be presented at the APWA annual expo in Chicago on August 18, 2025, underscoring the project's national recognition. This achievement marks a significant milestone for local infrastructure development and environmental stewardship.
