Everett council shames Kroger over plan to close Casino Road Fred Meyer store

Snohomish, WALocal News

The Everett City Council and Mayor Cassie Franklin unanimously adopted a resolution urging Kroger to reconsider closing the Fred Meyer store on Casino Road, which is scheduled to shut its doors on October 18, marking its 50th anniversary. Kroger attributed the closure to rising thefts, but city statistics indicated a significant decrease in crime, with a reported 36% drop in offenses at the store. Council member Paula Rhyne spoke out against Kroger's claims, asserting that the city responded to the store's needs with investments in public safety and community resources. Residents expressed their dismay, emphasizing that the closure would sever vital community connections. Council member Scott Bader cast the only dissenting vote, noting the city did not issue similar resolutions for other store closures.

The city plans to ensure families have reliable access to groceries and will explore redevelopment opportunities for the site in line with the South Everett Economic Development Strategy. Kroger's reported profits of $2. 7 billion in 2024 raise questions about their decision to close the store. The nearest grocery option will be a Safeway located nearly a mile north of the Fred Meyer.
