Second look at expanding Maltby Urban Growth Area to be at Sept. 23 meeting

Snohomish, WALocal News

The Snohomish County Planning Commission will convene on September 23 to evaluate the proposed 270-acre expansion of the Maltby Urban Growth Area. Approximately 81% of this area is earmarked for public and institutional use, particularly benefiting local schools and public facilities. County Legislative Analyst Ryan Hembree stated that the amended motion aims to gather insights from the Planning Commission and other departments without changing existing boundary lines. Residents raised transparency concerns, noting that the original motion was not included in the agenda prior to the August meeting. The inclusion of the Northshore School District property is projected to enhance urban safety standards and infrastructure for schoolchildren.

Last year, County Executive Dave Somers vetoed a similar expansion plan, which was not overridden due to insufficient votes. The upcoming hearing is vital for determining the future of development in the area, reflecting ongoing community interest and concern. The meeting will take place at 5:30 p. m. at the County Campus in Everett and will also be accessible via Zoom.
