Monroes annual Swifts Night Out to marvel, learn of these birds will be Sept. 6
Monroe's annual Swifts Night Out will take place on September 6, celebrating the migration of Vaux’s swifts to the historic chimney at Frank Wagner school. This family-friendly event runs from 4:30 to 8 p. m. , featuring a presentation at 6 p. m.
in the auditorium and various educational booths. On peak nights, over 20,000 swifts can be seen roosting in the chimney, making it a spectacular sight. The Pilchuck Audubon, Eastside Audubon, and Birds Connect Seattle collaborated in 2007 to save the chimney from demolition, leading to its current status as a protected site. As a result of these conservation efforts, the Vaux’s swift was designated Monroe's official city bird. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs for the best viewing experience.
This event not only highlights the importance of local wildlife but also fosters community involvement and education. Swifts Night Out serves as a reminder of the need to protect natural habitats in urban areas.
