PUDs utility bill aid program running short

Snohomish, WALocal News

The Community Energy Fund, which aids families facing utility bill crises, struggles with dwindling donations as demand surges. Since its inception by Snohomish County PUD in 1982, the fund has provided one-time grants of $200 through St. Vincent de Paul to those in financial distress. Despite an additional $5,000 raised monthly from promotional efforts, spokesperson Aaron Swaney indicated that only 45 families can be assisted at this time. To encourage business participation, PUD has distributed newsletters and postcards, but no significant contributions have been reported.

Melissa Wilch, PUD’s Market Segments Program Manager, called for local businesses to recognize their opportunity to contribute. She emphasized that if 1,500 businesses donated $50 monthly, the fund could serve 400 customers effectively. The PUD continues to invite community donations and support for fellow residents. Donations can be made online, by mail, or through the PUD bill.
