Snohomish County's child care crisis deepens, with a new report revealing only 62 licensed slots per 100 children, compared to Washington's average of 79. Interviews with 496 individuals confirm that 40% of families have reduced work hours or quit jobs because of inadequate child care options. The Early Learning Leadership Council recommends implementing navigators to assist providers with compliance and business development, and trusted messengers to help families in marginalized communities access subsidies. Co-chair Jennifer Pelissero stressed the importance of acting quickly to address these challenges. The report highlights that 78% of families view cost as a significant barrier to child care.

The council also proposes an early learning endowment funded by businesses and individuals to support these initiatives. Parent Hannah Meier shared her struggles with exorbitant child care costs, highlighting the impact on employment decisions. Local leaders recognize the urgent need for systemic changes to improve child care availability and affordability in the county.
