Monroe, Everett schools to have varsity girls flag football in spring

Snohomish, WALocal News

Monroe High School and three Everett high schools will introduce varsity girls flag football this spring, marking a significant development in women's sports in Washington. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association approved this program, the first addition of a girls varsity sport since the late 1990s. The inaugural season will start in March and could feature up to 16 games, culminating in a championship event on May 16. Monroe, along with Everett, Jackson, and Cascade high schools, will be the only schools in the WESCO conference to offer this program. Athletic directors in the Snohomish district are currently assessing interest levels in adding the sport at more schools.

Glacier Peak High’s Athletic Director Rory Rosenbach noted ongoing discussions about the program. Ashley Tuiasosopo, Monroe's athletic director, confirmed that the Everett School District will implement girls flag football at all three high schools. This initiative reflects a growing commitment to expanding athletic opportunities for female students in the region.
