Snohomish County Awarded 2 Million Federal Grant for Everett Intermodal Yard

Snohomish, WALocal News

Snohomish County has secured a $2 million federal BUILD grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation for the Everett Intermodal Yard and Curve Improvements project. This funding is part of a $34 million initiative aimed at enhancing rail capabilities and safety, vital for the county's solid waste management. County Executive Dave Somers remarked on the project's significance for ensuring a sustainable operation while Congressman Rick Larsen emphasized the link between infrastructure investments and job creation.

The grant will facilitate partnerships with BNSF and Republic Services for transporting solid waste efficiently to landfills in eastern Washington. Public Works Director Kelly Snyder expressed gratitude for the grant, noting its role in addressing increasing demand and improving operational safety. Without this financial support, the county may continue facing challenges with solid waste disposal, as evidenced by past incidents where refuse piled up due to a lack of rail containers. The Public Works Department manages approximately 670,000 tons of garbage yearly, underscoring the project's critical importance for community health and safety. The improvements are expected to enhance operational efficiency and better serve Snohomish County residents and visitors.
