Snohomish County’s Department of Conservation & Natural Resources has been awarded a $10 million grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Floodplains by Design program. This funding will support 13 capital projects, resulting in the reconnection of 366 acres of floodplain and the restoration of 28. 5 miles of river. The grant is part of a larger initiative, bringing total funding for the Community Floodplain Solutions program to $33. 3 million.
County Executive Dave Somers highlighted the grant's role in enhancing climate resilience and protecting local infrastructure. The Chinook Marsh project will receive $1. 1 million to reconnect over 400 acres of floodplain habitat, safeguarding critical infrastructure and avoiding potential economic losses. Additionally, $1 million will fund the Ag Tech Program, which provides farmers with technology to improve productivity and sustainability. Nearly $4.
5 million will be passed through to partners, including the Tulalip Tribes and Ducks Unlimited, to advance collaborative floodplain projects. This integrated approach not only addresses flooding but also supports threatened salmon habitats and local agriculture.
