Draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan Ready For Review
The Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management has published its draft Community Wildfire Protection Plan, seeking public input until July 30. This plan outlines various strategies to enhance forest health and community preparedness against wildfires. It reflects nearly two years of collaborative work involving local firefighters, state and federal agencies, tribes, and residents, accumulating over 1,000 public comments. Lucia Schmit, the County’s Emergency Management director, highlighted the importance of resident feedback before submitting the plan for state review. County Executive Dave Somers emphasized the necessity for residents to understand their wildfire risks and the actions they can take for safety.
The plan identifies 33 objectives and 70 strategies, including guidelines for reducing combustible brush and improving fire-resistant property. Historical data shows that warmer and drier weather has increased wildfire frequency and intensity in the region, making this plan crucial for community safety. The wildland fire season in Snohomish County typically runs from early July through fall, further underscoring the urgency of this initiative.
