Seattle magistrates balance fairness and fines

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle magistrates play a vital role in managing traffic and parking infractions, often addressing various excuses from drivers. Recent increases in parking fines aim to discourage curb parking, as magistrate Noah Weil explained. Qualified magistrates, who are experienced attorneys, handle most infractions and support elected judges in the city's busiest courthouse. For example, Weil dismissed a red light ticket after a driver provided photo evidence proving the car wasn't his. Another driver received a reduced fine after claiming school zone lights were active after school hours.

Magistrate Lisa Mansfield highlighted that while not everyone agrees with the outcomes, many feel satisfied if they believe their cases were fairly considered. The court's goal is to help individuals understand the system to prevent future infractions. Overall, magistrates balance fairness with the need to enforce traffic regulations effectively.
