Break-in at Mariners star's home leaves Reign forward Jordyn Huitema shaken, but resilient

Seattle, WALocal News

Jordyn Huitema, a forward for Seattle Reign FC, endured a harrowing home invasion on May 1 while home alone on Mercer Island. The break-in occurred when three male suspects, equipped to disable security systems, forcibly entered her residence, leaving Huitema to hide in a bathroom while attempting to call 911. The suspects used jamming devices on her phone, complicating her efforts to alert authorities. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of burglaries targeting professional athletes in the region, with prosecutors linking the case to other similar crimes. Earl Riley, 21, has been charged in connection with several burglaries, including one at the home of Huitema's partner, Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners.

Authorities expect to file additional charges as investigations continue. Despite the traumatic experience, Huitema returned to the soccer field the next day, showcasing her resilience by assisting in her team's victory. The ongoing targeting of athletes raises concerns about safety and security within their communities.
