West Seattle low bridge to be closed for repairs all weekend
Seattle's Spokane Street low bridge will close for repairs from 7 a. m. on June 7 until June 8. Crews will reinstall a hydraulic cylinder essential for the bridge's operation, which allows it to rotate for maritime traffic approximately 1,500 times a year. This closure impacts driving, biking, and walking across the bridge, which connects West Seattle to Harbor Island and the SODO and Duwamish Valley neighborhoods.
Built in 1991, the bridge features a unique design, rotating instead of lifting, and spans 480 feet. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) stresses that this repair is crucial for maintaining the bridge's functionality. This bridge is significant for local traffic and maritime navigation, emphasizing its role in the community. The hydraulic system allows for smooth operation, essential for the bridge's heavy usage. Local officials aim to complete the repair promptly to minimize disruptions to residents and businesses.
