Sea-Tac expands global reach with nonstop flight to Rome
Alaska Airlines plans to launch nonstop flights from Seattle to Rome starting in May 2026, marking the first direct route between the two cities. This service will operate four times weekly using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, responding to demand from travelers eager for an easier way to reach Italy. The announcement emphasizes Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's transformation into a significant international hub, now offering nonstop flights to 36 destinations, up from 26 in 2019. Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci described the Rome route as "a dream come true," highlighting the growing appetite for travel among Seattle residents. Recent expansions at Sea-Tac include new routes to Zurich and Copenhagen, indicating a broader strategy to enhance international connectivity.
Alaska's acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines' wide-body aircraft has facilitated this growth. The airline is also exploring additional European destinations such as London, Paris, and Berlin. This strategic expansion reflects a commitment to meeting the evolving travel needs of its customers.
