Former Seattle councilmember Sawant to run for Congress, incumbent responds to remarks
Kshama Sawant, the former socialist Seattle City Councilmember, announced her campaign for the 9th Congressional District, challenging incumbent Rep. Adam Smith. During her news conference, she emphasized her notable achievements, including the introduction of a $15 minimum wage and the Amazon Tax aimed at funding affordable housing. Sawant labeled Smith a "warmongering incumbent," accusing him of supporting policies she deems harmful, particularly regarding the situation in Gaza. She pledged to donate any salary exceeding the average worker's wage to social justice causes if elected.
In a statement, Smith welcomed her to the race, asserting that competitive elections are essential for democracy. He countered her claims by stating that her actions have previously benefitted Donald Trump and criticized her divisive policies on the council. The election will provide a stark contrast between their leadership styles, according to Smith. Voters in the 9th Congressional District will have a clear choice regarding effective representation versus ideological stunts.
