Speed-limiting tech coming for high-risk drivers in Washington

Seattle, WALocal News

Washington state will implement a law requiring high-risk drivers to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles starting in January 2029. This legislation targets individuals with suspended licenses for reckless driving or multiple traffic violations related to speeding. In 2022, speeding contributed to 34% of the 731 traffic fatalities in Washington, up from 30% in the 2015-2021 period. The law provides a choice for these drivers: either remain off the road during their suspension or drive with the technology that prevents them from exceeding the speed limit. Advocates highlight the dangers of unlicensed drivers, with a 2021 report estimating that approximately 75% of suspended drivers continue to drive.

The law is seen as a proactive measure to enhance road safety by controlling excessive speeds. Virginia adopted a similar law earlier this year, making Washington the second state to promote speed-limiting devices as an alternative to license suspension. The state will require drivers to cover the installation costs and a monthly fee, with provisions for those who cannot afford it.
