Teen dead in shooting at Garfield High School UPDATE Mayor and SPD chief try to address gun violence

A shooting outside Garfield High School in Seattle left a 17-year-old student dead on June 6, following gunfire reported shortly after 12:30 PM. The student was transported to Harborview Medical Center but could not be saved despite lifesaving efforts. Police are investigating the incident and reviewing security footage that allegedly shows armed students involved in the altercation. Mayor Bruce Harrell highlighted the ongoing gun violence issue in Seattle and committed to increasing police presence while advocating for stricter gun regulations. He stated that the accessibility of firearms contributes to the city's violence problems.

The interim SPD Chief, Sue Rahr, expressed her sorrow over the tragedy and noted the rapid progress of the investigation. In light of the incident, Garfield High canceled classes for two days and will provide students with access to confidential support services. The community's ongoing struggles with gun violence have prompted calls for more effective policing and regulation.
