Thrive International secures 2M grant to aid refugee housing at former Tacoma hotel

Seattle, WALocal News

Thrive International has secured a $2 million grant from the state to aid in acquiring a former hotel, now the Thrive Center Tacoma, which houses 376 asylum seekers. Located on South Hosmer Street, the center serves as a vital resource for nearly 200 children among its residents. Director Anna Bondarenko emphasized the importance of the facility's stability for residents transitioning to permanent housing. The grant significantly contributes to the organization's goal of purchasing the 115-unit property for $10. 7 million.

The Thrive Center offers services such as legal assistance from an on-site immigration attorney, as well as medical and social services. Many residents have successfully transitioned into permanent housing, including families who previously lived in a migrant encampment. The center's efforts reflect a growing response to the needs of asylum seekers in the area. As fundraising continues, this grant marks a vital step toward ensuring ongoing support for the vulnerable population.
