Lumen Field getting upgrades ahead of 2026 World Cup

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle's Lumen Field will undergo substantial upgrades ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aligning with FIFA's requirements for hosting six men's matches. Key improvements include replacing artificial turf with grass, requiring an irrigation system, grow lights, and maintenance equipment. The Washington Legislature has allocated $19. 4 million to finance these renovations, which also aim to enhance media space and security features such as turnstiles and new lighting. The stadium will temporarily be renamed Seattle Stadium during the World Cup due to FIFA rules prohibiting corporate branding.

Local officials stress the significance of a public-private partnership to ensure the project's success. With these upgrades, Lumen Field aims to boost its chances of hosting future events like the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2031. The work is expected to begin after the Seahawks' NFL season ends in early 2026, with most enhancements completed by May. After the World Cup, Lumen Field plans to reinstall artificial turf.
