Touch-screen kiosks may come to Seattle streets
Seattle city officials are weighing a proposal to install 30 digital kiosks in downtown areas ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Each kiosk will measure over 8 feet tall and provide information on local attractions, public safety, and events. Supporters, including Jon Scholes of the Downtown Seattle Association, believe the kiosks will enhance urban engagement and help people discover nearby businesses. However, privacy advocates like Tee Sannon from the ACLU of Washington warn of potential data collection and urge for strong policies before installation. The kiosks could generate approximately $1.
1 million annually through digital ads, which would fund downtown improvement efforts. Each kiosk will also function as a Wi-Fi hub and may include a selfie camera, though no security cameras will be installed. The Seattle City Council is expected to vote on the kiosks in early June, granting conceptual approval before specifics are finalized. Kiosks from the same company are already operational in 20 other cities, including San Diego and Miami.
