Seattle parks aim to crack down on late-night parties
Seattle officials announced plans to increase police patrols and install gates at popular parks to combat late-night partying and noise complaints. By the Fourth of July, Magnuson Park and Gas Works Park will have gates to restrict vehicle access after hours. Alki Beach and Golden Gardens will now close at 10:30 PM instead of 11:30 PM, a change aimed at preventing overnight trespassing and disturbances. City spokesperson Callie Craighead emphasized the need to address vandalism and illegal fires in the parks, especially following violent incidents like a fatal shooting last June. Some residents, however, argue that reducing hours may hinder enjoyment rather than solve problems, with one resident stating that regulations often fail to prevent the intended issues.
City officials are also installing concrete barriers in some park parking lots to prevent reckless driving. The changes are part of a broader summer safety plan that reflects growing concerns over safety in public spaces. Officials are exploring further gate installations at additional parks in the future.
