Major water main break creates sinkhole in Bellevue intersection

Seattle, WALocal News

A significant water main break disrupted traffic in Bellevue, Washington, closing all lanes at the intersection of NE 20th Street and 148th Avenue NE. The Bellevue Fire Department announced the closure shortly after 6:30 a. m. on Monday, advising drivers to seek alternative routes. Officials have prioritized stopping the water flow and assessing the damage caused by the large sinkhole.

The Redmond Police Department reported that the intersection will remain closed for an extended period while repairs are made. Water and power services in the area will be impacted for an undetermined time, with some businesses, such as the Bellevue Marketplace and IHOP, still without water. Utilities crews are actively working to restore service, but a long-term closure is expected. Once the road reopens, residents should anticipate rough conditions and ongoing construction for up to two weeks. This incident highlights the importance of infrastructure maintenance in preventing significant disruption to local traffic and services.
