Capitol Hill QFC redevelopment plan gets Directors Decision approval
The Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections approved plans for a six-story development on the site of the old QFC on 15th Ave E. This milestone follows nearly two years of discussions and includes a zoning departure to permit an extra story while preserving a European hornbeam tree. Local residents expressed opposition to the height increase along the commercial corridor of Capitol Hill, which has seen slower development compared to the neighborhood's core. The development will introduce a mixed-use structure with a new plaza and enhanced retail space. Preparatory inspections and studies will take place as the existing grocery remains operational, hosting events like the Punk Rock Flea Market for another year.
The developers, Hunters Capital and Runberg Architecture Group, aim to create a pedestrian-friendly environment. Appeals against the ruling must be filed by May 29th. Additionally, plans are underway for a nearby Safeway redevelopment, which aims to create two new five-story buildings and approximately 330 market-rate apartments.
