While Seattle debates Middle Housing, this 8-story project will fill in another Capitol Hill block

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle is moving forward with plans for an eight-story cohousing project on E Olive St. in Capitol Hill, replacing a 123-year-old house with 25 new homes. The development will feature shared amenities, including kitchens on each floor and a communal roof deck, fostering a sense of community among residents. This initiative occurs alongside city debates on "Middle Housing" zoning changes, aimed at addressing housing shortages in densely populated neighborhoods. Capitol Hill has absorbed much of Seattle's growth, pushing the city into the top five for expansion among major U.

S. cities. Despite a recent decline in construction activity, economic conditions may improve, leading to renewed development efforts in the area. M Power Construction purchased the site for $1,050,000 last October and is working with Bejelit on the project design. The demolition permit for the old house is currently under review, indicating a transition period before construction begins.

Once completed, the new project will contribute to the ongoing transformation of Capitol Hill's housing landscape.
