Seattle to enact new ordinance to curb after-hours nightlife violence starting Monday
Seattle's new ordinance aimed at reducing violence in after-hours nightlife venues will take effect on Monday, following a tragic shooting near a Pioneer Square club that resulted in three fatalities. The legislation requires venues operating between 2 a. m. and 6 a. m.
to adopt stringent safety protocols, including the installation of video surveillance and hiring at least two security guards. Erin Goodman, the Executive Director of the SODO Business Improvement Area, highlighted the necessity of providing safe options for socializing late at night. City officials reported that nightlife-related shootings comprise over ten percent of all shootings in Seattle. Community members have voiced safety concerns about late-night travel. Goodman expressed doubt about immediate compliance, citing years of businesses operating outside legal parameters.
The city plans to impose fines on non-compliant establishments while details on enforcement measures are still in development. This ordinance reflects a broader effort to tackle rising violence associated with nightlife in Seattle.
